Intertops Running Aussie Tourney Series July 14 - 23

Intertops Poker Logo

Intertops Poker has announced that it will be running a special Aussie Tournament Series. Despite the legal uncertainty surrounding poker in Australia, which led to the departure of 888poker among others, Intertops remains committed to serving the country as evidenced by the appearance of this MTT series. It consists of just six tournaments spread out over the weekends of July 14 - 16 and July 21 - 23.

Aussie Tournament Series Details

There will be three events costing $5 + $.50 to enter with guarantees of $500 apiece along with three more priced at $10 + $1 and sporting guarantees of $1,000 each. Each tournament will start at 8 p.m. AEST, which is a rarity in the online poker world because the majority of sites run games at times that are more convenient for Americans or Europeans. The starting time of 8 p.m. AEST corresponds to an early-bird 6 a.m. hour for residents of the Eastern seaboard of the United States and 11 a.m. for those in the United Kingdom. So apart from a few morning poker fans, the appeal of this series outside the Land Down Under will be quite limited.

Starting stacks are 3,000 with the initial blinds at 10/20, for deepish 150bb play to begin with, and each level of blinds will last 10 minutes. Rebuys will be possible for the first hour. At the end of the rebuy period, a final add-on of 5,000 chips can be purchased. All of these events will deliver No Limit Hold'em action; there's no Pot Limit Omaha or other variants represented.

Time Date Name Buyin

20:00 AEST July 15 MELBOURNE $1,000 GTD $10 + $1
20:00 AEST July 16 SYDNEY $1,000 GTD $10 + $1
20:00 AEST July 21 EVO $500 GTD $5 + $0.50

20:00 AEST July 23 FAIR DINKUM $1,000 GTD $10 + $1

Overlay Alert!

Intertops doesn't shy away from aggressive overlays particularly when it comes to specials and promotional offers. This is one of the ways it competes against larger online poker sites, like Ignition, which recently opened its doors to Australians. Even in Intertops' regular tournament schedule, there are frequent occasions when participation is not sufficient to meet the guaranteed amounts. For instance, on Thursday, July 13, a $25 + $2.50 tournament with a $750 guarantee attracted just 21 registrations, leading to a prize pool shortfall of $225.

An examination of the numbers shows that there will need to be 100 entries, rebuys, and add-ons for each event of the Aussie Tournament Series to meet its guarantee. When we consider the typical field sizes at this poker room along with the fact that the series is set to run at times when most of the world will be unable or unwilling to play, we conclude that there's a good chance that Australians who participate will benefit from some free cash contributed to the prize pools by Intertops.
