Merge Network Makes Big Changes to VIP Points Program

Merge Network VIP Changes

The current VIP points system on the Merge Gaming Network will no longer offer cash bonuses, and will instead offer players the option to use earned VIP points to enter 'marquee' multi-table tournaments. This comes from changes made today to the rewards section of Carbon Poker's website. As usual, ProfRB.com has all of the pertinent details of this change below.

The way players earn VIP points remains unchanged - though what players can do with them, once earned, has been modified. Players will no longer be able to purchase cash bonuses with their VIP points effective immediately.

Players instead will have the option to use VIP points to buy in directly to specially labeled tournaments with buy-ins of $11 or higher. These marquee tournaments include Early Bird, Nightly, Nightly Owl, and Sunday events, as well as promotional MTT series such as the upcoming Carbon OPS.

ProfRB.com has confirmed that the conversion rate to use VIP points for marquee tournaments is 10%. This means that a player who has earned 1,100 VIP points would be able to use them for a $11 tournament as described above. VIP points are still earned via the following methods:

  • Ring Games: Every $0.10 of rake contributed to the raked pot earns 1 VIP point. Fractional points are also awarded; so if a player contributed $0.75 in rake, the player would receive 7.5 points.
  • Sit & Go's and Multi-Table Tournaments: Every $0.10 paid in entry fees earns 1 VIP point.

Players will still be allowed to accumulate VIP points in relation to deposit or reload bonuses for cash, however. Merge has announced a new May reload bonus to coincide with the upcoming Carbon OPS. Players can earn 100% up to $2,000 using the code OPSPK when depositing between now and May 18th to begin earning the bonus. Said bonus will be awarded in $10 increments, deposited into your account after earning 1500 VIP points.

While in the immediate future there may be some consternation among certain types of players, the move appears to be intended to funnel more traffic into the daily tournament fields and thus, create a broader awareness of their strength in relation to competition among US-facing online poker rooms. Merge is currently second in US-available cash game player traffic and MTT offerings only to Bovada, and with recent desegregation among all Merge Network rooms, the network has begun to plant firm roots in the fight for American players. We expect Merge's tournament schedule to continue to strengthen, as evidenced by our own analysis in our Merge Network MTT Overlay and Tournament Results report (link below).
