Winning Poker Network has continued with its busy couple of weeks by introducing a new game that works similar to satellites. This new game will be available starting today for al tournaments.
This new game combines slot machines and the theory of satellites to give players a different option in their quest to qualify for their favorite Winning Poker Network hosted tournaments. A player can bid either $0.01, $0.25 or $1 and then spin the virtual slot machine to hope to win by getting 3 of the same pictures in a row. The rake for these games is only going to be 2% as opposed to the 10% that is standard in satellites, according to Winning Poker Network’s website. This new game is called “Spin to Get IN.” Players can calculate their chance of winning a ticket to their desired tournament by using the formula: (Bid Amount - Rake) / Tournament Entry.
Example: $1 bid on an $10+$1 tournament = ($1 - $0.02) / $11 = 8.91%
Players will be able to use this slot machine-esque system on any tournament as long as they are not registered for it yet. Also, if you win a ticket to a tournament that doesn’t happen, then you will be refunded in $T, which is pretty fair compensation. There has not been any word on if this will change the current satellites schedule and it’s hard to say what effect it will have as this is a fairly new and original idea.
Overall, it’s an interesting proposition, because some players will have an enhanced chance of getting a ticket to an event, where others will have a reduced chance if they decide to go this route. The time commitment will be significantly less though making that a pretty big consideration for a lot of recreational players. There is a lot of qualities for a player to take into account when deciding if they want to play these or not.
It has been pretty difficult to gauge player reactions to this announcement, because of a lot of extenuating circumstances. Many players have been upset in the different forums, because Winning Poker Network has been suffering from serious disconnection and stability issues since December 7th, but those issues shouldn’t take away from this announcement. This game has been in development for a long time, and likely has been finalized for more than a week, well before these current issues began. Players have had a hard time reconciling this though, so the response is jaded against the game, as players think they are prioritizing the wrong things.
It has been a really busy few weeks for Winning Poker network as a whole though with the Winning Millions coming up, “The Cage” being a huge success, the midstakes “Cage” beginning, the OSS in full swing and PokerHost departing Equity Poker Network to join WPN. There has been some negative press as well though, especially with regards to the constant server problems that have plagued the network in the past two days. Though, it doesn’t appear that WPN is the only one suffering from this hiccup.
Some players are worried, because this will interest some recreational players more than an actual satellite, but there is also the chance that these recreational players will gain entry into the larger tournament when they wouldn’t have in the past. It’s a trade-off that will take time to evaluate fully. Regardless, they provide more options for players and present new ways for players to qualify for tournaments that they might never have played in previously. Tell us what you think about it!
