About the Sun Run Series

Info Button: Blue

There are a total of 78 numbered tournaments throughout the Sun Run Series. The actual number of tournament is slightly higher because there are a few “paired” tournaments that are associated with each other in some way and share a number. For example, Sun Run #7A Jackpot Mini and #7B PKO Jackpot Mini occur an hour apart, share the same buyin and guarantee, and differ solely in the fact that one is a Progressive Knockout and the other is not. There are special prizes for outstanding performance in both tournaments, which is why they're grouped together in this way.

In a change from most of the tournament series at the Winning Poker Network, this one focuses on small and medium buyins. Therefore, you won't find buyins that run into the hundreds or thousands of dollars but will rather be able to partake of more affordable fare priced between $5.50 and $66. NL Hold'em dominates the schedule, but there are a few MTTs for other poker variants, like 5 Card PLO/8 and Stud/8.

Here's a rundown of some of the more notable events in the series:

Multi-Flight

There are three big multi-flight MTTs on the schedule of the Sun Run Series. They feature multiple Day 1 flights running from June 7 through June 28 followed by Day 2, which occurs on June 28 at 4:05 p.m. ET and combines all the survivors from the Day 1s into one field.

All three of these multi-flight tourneys feature the popular Progressive KnockOut format. This means that every player has a bounty on his or her head, which starts at a certain predetermined value. Whenever a player is eliminated, however, their victorious opponent does not receive the entire bounty amount. Instead that individual is paid half of the bounty, and the other half is then added to the bounty on their own head.

Here's the relevant info for the three main multi-flights:

  • Sun Run #4, $66 buyin: $300,000 GTD PKO
  • Sun Run #5, $22 buyin: $75,000 GTD PKO
  • Sun Run #6, $5.50 buyin: $50,000 GTD PKO

Main Events

June 28 is a big day for the Sun Run Series because not only do the three multi-flight events terminate in Day 2s, but also three series Main Events are scheduled to run that same day at 12:30 p.m. ET. They are:

  • Sun Run #1 Main Event, $66 buyin: $200,000 GTD
  • Sun Run #2 Mini Main Event, $27.50 buyin: $100,000 GTD
  • Sun Run #4 Micro Main Event, $5.50: $20,000

Leaderboard

Podium

Even as you buy into the events that catch your eye, there's more money to be won in the Sun Run Series than just the tournament prize pools. You see, there will also be a leaderboard competition running with $15,500 in prizes available.

Every in-the-money finish in a Sun Run tournament counts toward the leaderboard. The number of points awarded is equal to the square root of the prize pool over the square root of a player's finishing position. At the end of the series, the top 10 finishers will receive the following rewards:

  • 1st: $2,650 VENOM ticket + $2,500 cash
  • 2nd: $2,650 VENOM ticket + $1,000 cash
  • 3rd: $2,650 VENOM ticket
  • 4th: $1,500 cash
  • 5th: $750 cash
  • 6th – 10th: $360 in tournament tickets

Why a New Series?

Green Question Mark

Fans of the Winning Poker Network might be wondering why its debuting a new poker series. After all, it already has recurring Online Super Series and High Five series throughout the year, so why not host another installment of one of those preexisting series?

While we're not privy to the inner workings of the network, we can make a few educated guesses. The OSS is a monster of a series, which usually lasts more than a month. The High Five has a certain, um, “botanical” theme. Both of them typically spread a wide range of buyin levels, but the major focus of the main events is on the larger tournaments that cost $100+ to enter.

By contrast, the Sun Run series lasts just a couple of weeks and is not themed around any kind of herbal substances. At the same time, it appears to be geared toward those of a more modest bankroll than the typical entrants in major OSS or Hi5 events. Thus, the Sun Run Series occupies a niche that had perhaps been previously underserved by existing tournament series.
