The Winning Poker Network's multi-table tournament series featured 25 events over five days with $420,000 in guaranteed prize money.
The High Five tournament series is now history for the Winning Poker Network. ProfRB.com delves into the numbers and recent tournament history to provide analysis on WPN's continued opportunities for players of all skill levels.
WPN has already had quite an interesting year. They've made big changes in their poker operations, including expansion of the Sit & Crush promotion, removing the additional rake from cash tables from the previous incarnation of the Beast, and moving forward with a weekly Beast promotion that offers grinders a sizable incentive to multi-table ring games. One area where changes have been minimal, however, is on the daily tournament schedule.
There have been changes made. A few of the best tournaments had buy-ins or guarantees slightly adjusted. A couple new MTT's have appeared, including the $20,000 guaranteed Sunday High Roller that has averaged a $37,500 prize pool since the beginning of May. Overall, however, the daily schedule has been largely the same for more than a year. Overlays have been creeping in a bit more frequently - but this is actually a boon for players and the room itself. Players have had more opportunities for additional value, and WPN has a built-in advertisement to players to come play in their tournaments.
While a small reduction in revenue dollars generated from the tournament schedule has occurred, keep in mind that poker is generally a drop in the bucket when it comes to online gaming networks. Casino side operations drive the most business and revenue, and typically online poker brings in a small percentage to the overall bottom line. WPN is an extremely viable company and despite some stagnation on their tournament revenue, this is not to say that the network is struggling financially in any way.
Bringing back the High Five series, which first ran in November of 2013 with more than 10,000 players swelling prize pools to over $420,000 (and having only two overlays for a total of $115), has continued WPN's penchant for giving their players more options in tournament play. WPN had previously ran a highly successful Online Super Series in March, and with another $420,000 in guaranteed tournaments in the offering this time around, even more money than the usual daily fare was up for grabs.
June is historically one of the slowest months for player traffic in all of online poker, and the final day of the High Five series fell on Father's Day to boot. WPN knew this when they announced the series back in late April, and still continued to promote the event despite the possibility of overlays.
Over the 25 events of the High Five series, there were 13 overlays for a money total of just over $35,000. $15,000 of that amount came from the $150,000 guaranteed Main Event, leaving a little over $20,000 spread between 12 other tournaments. One of those overlays is of particular interest, which occurred in the $25,000 GTD rebuy/add-on, that showcased WPN's desire to maintain opportunity for its players. Check out our ACR Poker review, Black Chip review, True Poker review, and Ya Poker review for more details on WPN skins.
Holding a $25,000 guaranteed rebuy/add-on tournament, on Father's Day no less, made it apparent that WPN was ready for an overlay. Rebuy/add-on MTT's have gradually become a lot less popular over the years in online poker, and with a $33 buy-in and a lot of players spending the day with their fathers, hitting the $25,000 mark was always going to be a long shot at best. The event overlaid for $5,620, as 242 players took part and nearly 650 entries, rebuys, and add-ons in total comprised the prize pool.
So how has WPN continued to move forward while providing players ample added value potential? One of the reasons has been a steadfast dedication to their tournament schedule, along with the structures of said tournaments. Most of the main MTT's on the daily schedule feature 5,000 starting chips, 15 minute blinds, and approximately 190 minutes of late registration. While some may prefer a quicker turnover between events, most appreciate the ability to play more hands and have more of a real-life feel to the game. Players can still enter several tournaments at once (and a lot do), and casual players who may only play in one or two MTT's a day (or less) have the opportunity to play more hands and have more shots at making the money. Overall, the event provided players with an early respite from the upcoming dog days of summer. There are rumors that WPN may be putting out another series soon as well. Stay tuned to ProfRB.com for the very latest in this regard!
